When most people think of epoxy river furniture, their minds go straight to black walnut. And for good reason — walnut is stunning. But for a coffee table that truly stops people in their tracks, ambrosia maple deserves far more attention than it gets.
At Riverside Workshop, our latest build is a 5ft x 5ft ambrosia maple coffee table with semi-clear black epoxy rivers — and it might be one of our favourite pieces to date. Here’s why this wood and epoxy combination works so well.
What Makes Ambrosia Maple Special?
Ambrosia maple gets its name from the ambrosia beetle, which bores into the tree and introduces a fungus that creates the wood’s signature blue-grey streaking. No two slabs are ever the same. The result is a warm, creamy base tone punctuated by dramatic mineral streaks that run unpredictably across the grain — natural abstract art that no craftsman could replicate by hand.
It’s a wood that rewards a closer look. The more you study the surface, the more detail you find.
A fully opaque epoxy pour covers what’s underneath it. A semi-transparent black epoxy river doesn’t. Instead, it allows the grain and figure of the maple to remain faintly visible through the epoxy channel — creating a sense of depth that a solid colour simply can’t achieve.
On ambrosia maple specifically, this technique is particularly effective. The contrast between the maple’s light, figured surface and the dark semi-clear rivers creates a moody, layered aesthetic that works equally well in modern, industrial, and natural home interiors.
The surface is finished with Rubio Monocoat, a single-coat hardwax oil that protects the wood while keeping its natural texture and warmth fully intact. Black steel legs complete the build with a minimal, contemporary base that lets the tabletop do the talking
Custom Built to Order
Like every piece we make at Riverside Workshop, this table is built from scratch to your specifications. Wood species, epoxy colour, river width, leg style, and dimensions can all be tailored to your space. If you love the ambrosia maple and black epoxy combination but need a different size or a different leg finish, we’ll build it exactly the way you want it.
