If you’ve been scrolling through epoxy river tables online and thinking I want one of those — you’re not alone. Custom epoxy river tables have become one of the most sought-after pieces of statement furniture in North America, and for good reason. No two are ever identical, they’re built to last a lifetime, and they turn any room into a conversation starter. But if you’ve never ordered a custom piece of furniture before, the process can feel overwhelming. What wood should you choose? What colour epoxy? How long does it take? What does it actually cost?

This guide breaks it all down…..

What Is an Epoxy River Table?

An epoxy river table is a piece of furniture made from two or more natural wood slabs with a channel of coloured epoxy resin poured between them — designed to mimic the look of a river flowing through the wood. The effect is dramatic, organic, and completely unique to each build. The epoxy can be virtually any colour — deep ocean blue, black, turquoise, clear, white, or even metallic with mica powder added for shimmer. The wood slabs are typically live edge, meaning the natural contour and bark edge of the tree are preserved rather than cut straight.

Choosing Your Wood Species

The wood you choose sets the tone for the entire piece. At Riverside Workshop we work with a range of species, each with its own character.

Black walnut is the most popular choice. Its rich, chocolatey tones and dramatic grain make it the ideal canvas for almost any epoxy colour, especially blues, teals, and black.

Ambrosia maple is an underrated option. Its light, creamy base with natural blue-grey mineral streaking pairs beautifully with darker epoxy pours, creating exceptional contrast and depth.

White oak offers a cleaner, more contemporary look with a tight, consistent grain. It works particularly well with clear or smokey epoxy finishes for a more understated aesthetic. Every slab we source is hand-selected for figure, grain movement, and character — because the wood is half the design.

Choosing Your Epoxy Colour

This is where most people spend the most time, and rightfully so — the epoxy colour defines the mood of the piece. Deep black epoxy creates a dramatic, modern look that pairs well with both walnut and maple. Turquoise and ocean blue are the most popular colours and work beautifully with walnut’s warm tones. Clear epoxy lets the wood take centre stage, with the river acting as a subtle divider rather than a bold feature. For something truly one of a kind, mica powder can be added to any colour pour to create a metallic shimmer that shifts in different lighting. We also offer semi-transparent pours, where the epoxy allows a faint view of the wood grain beneath the surface — adding an extra layer of depth and texture to the finished piece.

Sizing and Configuration

Custom means exactly that. Whether you need a 6ft dining table for a family of six or a 10ft boardroom table for a corporate office, we build to the dimensions your space requires. Common configurations include dining tables, coffee tables, console tables, desks, boardroom tables, and bar tops — but if you can imagine it, we can build it.

Leg Styles and Finishes

The base of your table completes the design. We offer a range of steel leg styles including farmhouse, K-shape, hairpin, waterfall, and custom fabricated options in matte black, brushed steel, or powder-coated finishes. The right leg choice depends on the overall aesthetic you’re going for — a farmhouse base adds warmth, while a slim K-shape keeps things sleek and modern.

Surface Finish

Every table we build is finished with Rubio Monocoat, a premium single-coat hardwax oil that protects the wood while preserving its natural texture, warmth, and grain. Unlike polyurethane finishes, Rubio Monocoat doesn’t sit on top of the wood — it bonds with the wood fibers at a molecular level, resulting in a surface that is both durable and completely natural to the touch.

How Long Does It Take?

Custom epoxy river tables are not mass-produced. Each piece is built from scratch, which means lead times vary depending on our current build schedule and the complexity of your piece. Reach out early if you have a deadline — we’ll always be upfront about what’s achievable.
