Every black walnut live edge bench we build at Riverside Workshop starts with a hand-selected solid walnut slab pulled from our inventory for grain quality, figure, and natural edge character. At 1.75 inches thick, each bench has exceptional substance and weight — the kind of piece that feels as significant as it looks. The live edge profile preserves the full natural outer contour of the walnut tree — the organic curves, the grain movement that runs to the very edge of the slab, and any natural character marks that formed over decades of growth. Its density makes it highly resistant to denting and everyday wear. Its natural oils give it a built-in resistance to moisture that most other species lack. And its colour — that signature deep chocolate brown with purple and grey undertones — deepens and enriches over time rather than fading, meaning a black walnut bench built today will be more beautiful in ten years than it is on delivery day.

Custom Steel Legs

Every bench is completed on custom fabricated steel legs in your choice of style and finish. Standard leg options include flat bar, hairpin, U-shape, and straight designs. Available in matte black, brushed steel, and powder-coated finishes.

Flat bar legs in matte black against black walnut is one of the most popular combinations in contemporary furniture design — the deep, dark tones of the walnut and the industrial matte black steel create a cohesive, sophisticated aesthetic that works in virtually every modern interior. Standard leg height is 18 inches — the correct height for use as a dining bench or entryway seat. Custom heights available for counter height, bar height, or any specific application.

Stain & Finish

Every bench is finished with Rubio Monocoat, a premium eco-friendly hardwax oil that is one of the most respected wood finishes in professional woodworking. Unlike polyurethane coatings that sit on top of the wood surface, Rubio Monocoat bonds with the wood fibers at a molecular level — protecting the surface against moisture, marks, and daily use while keeping the wood looking and feeling completely natural.

On black walnut specifically, a natural Rubio Monocoat finish enhances the species' deep tones and natural lustre without adding an artificial sheen. The full Rubio Monocoat colour range is available if a specific stain tone is required, though the majority of walnut bench orders are finished natural — the wood speaks for itself.

All slabs are kiln-dried and planed before production begins to prevent warping and ensure long-term dimensional stability.

Indoor & Outdoor Use

Black walnut live edge benches are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. For outdoor applications we recommend specifying an exterior finish at time of order — we will apply a UV-resistant protective coating appropriate for your climate and use case. Bring the piece under cover during winter months to preserve the finish long term.
