Your kitchen countertop is the most-used surface in your home. It handles daily meal prep, morning coffee, family gatherings, and everything in between. It deserves to be built from something real.
At Riverside Workshop, we handcraft custom solid wood kitchen countertops to order — cut to your exact dimensions, finished with food-safe Rubio Monocoat, and built from premium Canadian hardwood species that only get more beautiful with age. Whether you’re renovating an entire kitchen, replacing a single section of counter, building a kitchen island top, or finishing a bar, we’ll build the exact piece your space requires.
Why Choose a Solid Wood Kitchen Countertop
Solid wood countertops bring warmth, texture, and character to a kitchen that stone, laminate, and engineered surfaces simply cannot replicate. Every slab is unique — the grain pattern, figure, and natural colour variation of real wood means the countertop you receive is the only one in the world. Unlike mass-produced surfaces, a solid wood countertop from Riverside Workshop is a genuine piece of craftsmanship that will outlast any kitchen renovation trend.
With proper care and periodic re-oiling, a solid wood countertop will last for decades — and improve in character as it ages.
Wood Species Available
Choosing the right wood species for your kitchen countertop depends on your existing cabinetry, your flooring, and the overall aesthetic you’re working toward. At Riverside Workshop we work with a range of premium hardwood species:
Black walnut is the most sought-after species for premium kitchen countertops. Its rich, dark chocolate tones and dramatic grain movement create a bold, luxurious surface that pairs beautifully with white, cream, and natural wood cabinetry. Black walnut is a dense, durable hardwood that handles the demands of a kitchen environment with ease.
Ambrosia maple delivers a lighter, more distinctive surface. Its creamy base tone with natural blue-grey mineral streaking creates a countertop that’s as much art as it is functional surface — no two slabs ever share the same pattern.
White oak is a versatile, contemporary choice. Its tight, consistent grain and neutral tone works well with nearly any kitchen palette and is particularly popular in Scandinavian, shaker, and modern farmhouse kitchen designs.
Hard maple is the classic butcher block choice — dense, light in colour, and exceptionally durable for high-use cutting and prep areas.
Other species available on request. Contact us to discuss what’s currently in our slab inventory.
Edge Profiles
Every countertop we build is available in your choice of edge profile. Straight edge countertops deliver a clean, architectural look with perfectly flat edges on all sides — the right choice for modern and contemporary kitchens. Live edge countertops preserve the full natural outer edge of the slab, including its organic curves, bark line, and natural character — the right choice for kitchens that celebrate the raw beauty of natural wood. Beveled, eased, and custom edge profiles are available on request.
Epoxy River Countertops
For clients who want a kitchen countertop that goes beyond wood alone, Riverside Workshop offers epoxy river countertops — where a channel of coloured or clear epoxy resin is poured between two wood slabs and finished flush with the surface.
The epoxy river can run the full length of the counter, creating a seamless, dramatic design that draws the eye the full width of your kitchen. Colour options include deep black, ocean blue, turquoise, clear, white, and custom colours with mica powder for a metallic shimmer. A clear glass top epoxy layer can be added to the entire surface for added protection and a smooth, glass-like finish.
Epoxy river countertops are food-safe, heat-resistant to normal kitchen temperatures, and sealed to the same standard as our standard wood countertops.
Food-Safe Finish — Rubio Monocoat
Every wood kitchen countertop we build is finished with Rubio Monocoat, a premium food-safe hardwax oil used by professional woodworkers and kitchen makers worldwide. Unlike polyurethane finishes that sit on top of the wood, Rubio Monocoat bonds with the wood fibers at a molecular level — providing exceptional protection against moisture, staining, and daily use without adding a plastic or artificial feel to the surface.
The result is a countertop that looks and feels like natural wood, is completely safe for food preparation, and is easy to maintain with periodic re-oiling using the same product.
Custom Sizing — Any Dimension
Every countertop we build is cut to your exact dimensions. Whether you need a single 36-inch counter section, a full-run kitchen in multiple pieces, a 96-inch island top, or an L-shaped configuration with a mitered corner, we’ll build it to fit. Standard kitchen counter depth is 25.5 inches but we work to any depth, length, and thickness your project requires.
Provide us with your measurements and we’ll cut your countertop to within a fraction of an inch.
