A live edge bench built from solid maple is one of the most versatile and enduring pieces of furniture you can bring into your home. Maple's warm, creamy tone and consistent, close grain make it equally at home in a modern farmhouse dining room, a clean Scandinavian entryway, a contemporary urban hallway, or on a deck or patio in the warmer months. It is a wood that suits almost every interior palette — and one that only improves in warmth and character as it ages.

Every maple live edge bench we build at Riverside Workshop starts as a hand-selected solid maple slab chosen from our inventory for grain quality, figure, and natural edge character. The live edge profile preserves the full natural outer contour of the tree — the organic curves, bark line, and any knots, checks, or figure that formed over the life of the slab. No two benches share the same edge profile or grain pattern. The bench you receive is the only one of its kind.

Why Maple

Maple is one of the hardest and most durable domestic hardwoods available in Canada, making it an excellent choice for a bench that will see daily use as seating. Its density and tight grain mean it resists denting and surface wear far better than softer species, and it responds exceptionally well to staining — from natural and white wash through to darker tones that bring out the depth of the grain.

Ambrosia maple — a naturally occurring variation caused by the ambrosia beetle — adds distinctive blue-grey mineral streaking to the surface that no other species can replicate. If you are interested in ambrosia maple specifically, mention it when placing your order and we will do our best to accommodate from current slab inventory. The streaking is unpredictable and unique to each slab, which makes every ambrosia maple bench a genuinely singular piece.

Leg Styles

Every bench is completed on custom fabricated steel legs in your choice of style and finish. Standard options include flat bar, hairpin, U-shape, and straight leg designs in matte black, brushed steel, and powder-coated finishes. Leg height is set to standard bench height of 18 inches by default — custom heights available for counter height, bar height, or specific application requirements.

Hairpin legs in natural or brushed steel against light maple grain creates a warm, vintage-inspired look that is one of our most popular combinations for maple benches specifically. Flat bar legs in matte black against maple creates a bolder contrast that suits more contemporary and industrial-leaning interiors. We are happy to make recommendations based on your space and brief.

Stain & Finish

Every bench surface is finished with Rubio Monocoat, a premium eco-friendly hardwax oil that protects the wood while preserving its natural warmth and texture. The full Rubio Monocoat colour range is available — from natural and white wash through to charcoal, smoke, and every stain tone in between. Gloss, satin, and matte finish levels are all available.

Maple takes stain particularly well, making it one of the most flexible species for clients who want a specific colour tone to match existing furniture or flooring. If you have a target stain colour in mind, send us a reference image and we will match it as closely as possible from the Rubio Monocoat range.

All wood is kiln-dried and planed before production begins to prevent warping and ensure long-term dimensional stability.

Indoor & Outdoor Use

Our maple live edge benches are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. For outdoor applications on decks, patios, and garden spaces, we recommend a UV-resistant exterior finish option — mention your intended use when placing your order and we will spec the right finish for your environment. We recommend bringing outdoor pieces under cover during winter months to extend the life of the finish.

Sizing & Custom Options

The standard bench starts at $395 CAD. Pricing varies by length and leg style. Common bench lengths range from 3 feet to 8 feet — tell us your required length and we will build it to that dimension. Custom widths, thicknesses, and leg configurations are all available on request.
